The overarching aim of this introductory activity is to spark curiosity and gather essential aural experience. The song, Éiníní, offers opportunities for learners to experience musical elements from a sensory point of view. These elements will be presented more formally in later learning activities.

LYRICS

Introduction

The aim of this activity is for learners to commit to memory, the lyrics of the song, Éiníní, prior to learning the melody.

Learn the Lyrics

This activity introduces learners to an audio performance of the song, Éiníní by a mixed ensemble of violin, cello, guitar, and voice. Learners will hear the melodic line married to the lyrics they have previously learned. Listening with focus and concentration will help to enable powers of musical observation.

Listen and Enjoy (audio)

This activity uses a performance of Éiníní, by a mixed ensemble of voice, violin, cello, and guitar as a point of inspiration for the creation of something new. Each learner will illustrate a copy of the lyrics of the song in their own way and add it to their Music Journal - a record of repertoire learned throughout the year.

Create a Music Journal Entry

This activity presents the song, Éiníní, in a video rendition. Learners can enjoy watching and listening while preparing for the next step - learning the melody.

The aim of this activity is for learners to begin to develop the aural and vocal skill required to be able to sing with accuracy, the song Éiníní. The arrangement of this song offers the melody in two different key centres: C and D. In this first exercise, learners will master the melody in C Major. Technical details about key centres and keys will be presented formally in later stages, so for now, don’t worry about explaining anything - just enjoy singing.

Learn the Melody in C Major

The aim of this second Éiníní: Foghlaimígí Fonn an Amhráin activity is for learners to continue to develop the aural and vocal skill required to be able to sing with accuracy, the song Éiníní, this time in the key of D Major! Learners may sense something important when they learn to sing the familiar melody in this new key. They may feel something different in their voices and also hear something different in the timbre (tone quality) of the recorded voice. Once again, technical details about key centres, keys, and timbre will be presented formally at a later stage, so, don’t get bogged down with explanations for now, just enjoy singing!

A carefully sequenced six-lesson music unit using the song Éiníní to develop listening skills, lyric memorization, vocal accuracy, and creative expression while building confidence and joy in musical learning.
