This activity offers learners an opportunity to listen to an orchestral work entitled, Freedom, by composer Adele O’Dwyer.

Exposure to the sounds of the symphony orchestra opens up a wide palette of instrumental timbres and playing styles which can be explored in more depth in future.

Listen and Enjoy (Audio)

This activity uses a performance of Freedom by a large ensemble of 50 players called the symphony orchestra as the inspiration for the creation of something new. Each learner will make a music journal entry page by creating a personal response to the music. This can take the form of a drawing, a story, a poem, a collage, or any other form of creative response that can be recorded on paper. In future activities, learners will explore other ways to response creatively that require different recording mechanisms. For now, this is a simple start, one that all learners can engage in without technical complications.

This Musical Alphabet: Forwards and Backwards learning experience is a follow-on exercise to the Musical Alphabet: Going Forwards pre-requisite activity. Enjoy the process as learners strive to memorise the sequence of the musical alphabet going in both directions. This can be a challenging exercise that can take many repetitions to master.

Once learner confidence is high, try the follow-up worksheet video for group learning and pdf for printing for an individual challenge. When using the video activity, make use of the pause button to offer time for all learners to work out the answer to each puzzle.
