This activity introduces the topic and lyrics of the song, An Cucú, in preparation for learning and committing the lyrics to memory.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Introduction

The aim of this activity is for learners to commit to memory, the lyrics of the song An Cucú prior to learning the melody.

Learn the Lyrics

This introductory activity presents a performance of An Cucú by a mixed instrumental ensemble instruments and voice in an audio-only form. Without visual stimulation, learners can focus fully on the sonic musical experience of listening. This will be the first time learners will hear the familiar lyrics of An Cucú married to the melody

Listen and Enjoy (audio)

This activity uses a performance of An Cucú, by a mixed instrumental ensemble and singer as a point of inspiration for the creation of something new. Each learner will illustrate a copy of the lyrics of the song in their own way and add it to their Music Journal - a record of repertoire learned throughout the year.

Create a Music Journal Entry

Use the An Cucú: Foghlaimígí Fonn an Amhráin video to begin to learn the melody. The arrangement breaks the melody into short, easy to remember phrases so that learners can master each small piece with confidence.

Learn the Melody

An Cucú can be sung in a two-part canon (also known as a round). In this sequence of learning activity, learners will experience the lyrics of the song sung in canon phrase by phrase, have a chance to practice singing in canon by following the model voice, and finally to add some nice ‘cuckoo calls’ to add interest to the performance.

When singing in canon, the two parts create a beautiful combination of notes called harmony. Learners will find this really exciting if they are free to listen and sing at the same time! To sing a canon well, it is important to have ears for both parts at the same time – this takes time to learn but is very well worth it as it prepares learners for other types of harmony singing.
